Lost: Episode - The Unseen Path

            INT. CAVE - DAY

Jack, Kate, and Sawyer walk into a previously undiscovered cave on the island. It appears to be man-made and somehow eerily familiar.

JACK: Any idea what this place is?

SAWYER: Doesn't matter. Looks like someone's idea of a bad practical joke.

KATE: Let's just have a look around, okay?

INT. CAVE - CHAMBER - DAY

They explore a chamber filled with drawings on the walls, similar to the ones found in the hatch. In the center of the chamber, there is a large, strange door with symbols engraved on it.

KATE (CONT'D): What do you think is behind that door?

JACK: I don't know, but we need to find out.

Jack, Kate, and Sawyer attempt to open the door, but it's locked.

SAWYER: (frustrated) Just our luck. We find a creepy door and then can't open it.

JACK: We'll figure it out. We always do.

INT. CAVE - CHAMBER - DAY - LATER

The group, along with Hurley, Sayid, and Locke, are studying the symbols on the door, attempting to solve the puzzle to open it.

SAYID: These symbols... they do not make any sense.

KATE: Maybe we just need to find the right combination?

HURLEY: (nervously) Uh, guys? Maybe we should come back later. This place gives me the creeps.

LOCKE: I agree with Kate. We have nothing to lose by trying.

They continue to study the door, trying different combinations of symbols.

INT. BEACH CAMP - NIGHT

The group returns to camp with no answer to the puzzle. Jack speaks with Desmond.

JACK: I thought we found every secret this island had to offer.

DESMOND: The island always has more to show us.

JACK: I suppose it's just wishful thinking that we're done with all the surprises.

DESMOND: On this island, mate, there are no guarantees.

INT. CAVE - CHAMBER - DAY - FLASHBACK:

In a FLASHBACK, we see a young Danielle Rousseau discovering the cave and quickly leaving, unsettled by what she found.

INT. BEACH CAMP - NIGHT

Claire, Jin, and Sun discuss the new cave.

CLAIRE: Why don't we just leave it alone? It's not like we need to know what's in there.

SUN: (in Korean) 겁이 나? (Translation: Are you scared?)

JIN: (in Korean) 이마 '폐허', 빛안을 만 탐구한다. (Translation: This 'ruin' will be better left untouched.)

The camp is quiet as everyone settles down for the night, uneasy about the new discovery.

EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT

Suddenly, from the jungle, they hear the familiar sound of the monster approaching - a mix of heavy metal clanks and mechanical screeches.

SAWYER: Not again...

The survivors run from the camp, seeking refuge from the monster. Jack catches a glimpse of the smoke monster heading towards the cave.

JACK: It's going towards the cave.

The surviving group divides into those trying to escape the monster and those wanting to protect the cave. The scene ends in chaos as they are unsure of what to do next.

            INT. HATCH - NIGHT

Hurley, Locke, Charlie, and Claire are inside the Hatch, staring at the new symbols on the wall they didn't see before.

HURLEY
Dude, have you guys ever seen these symbols before?

LOCKE
No, they must have appeared when the timer hit zero.

CHARLIE
What do you reckon they mean?

Suddenly, the Hatch shakes and there's a huge noise from outside.

CLAIRE
What was that?!

Locke grabs a flashlight and everybody hurries outside

EXT. CRASH SITE - NIGHT

Kate and Sawyer gather their weapons, preparing for whatever comes next. Jin and Sun hold each other in fear. A mysterious, distant HOWL echoes in the jungle.

SAWYER
Guess it's about time for more trouble in paradise.

KATE
Keep your guard up. It could be the Others.

CUT TO:

EXT. HATCH - CONTINUOUS

Locke, Hurley, Charlie, and Claire exit the Hatch.

HURLEY
Oh, man! It's the smoke monster again!

Locke squints in the low light, trying to confirm Hurley's suspicions.

LOCKE
I can't be sure. Stay close.

CHARLIE
(whispers to Claire)
Keep Aaron safe, yeah?

Claire nods and tightens her hold on Aaron.

CUT TO:

EXT. JUNGLE - CONTINUOUS

The smoke monster slithers through the trees, howling and getting closer to the Hatch.

CUT TO:

EXT. HATCH - CONTINUOUS

Locke checks the timer, noticing it is counting down again.

LOCKE
We have to reset the timer, now!

The smoke monster is now closing in on them, the noise becoming deafening.

CHARLIE
But what about that thing?! We can't just ignore it!

LOCKE
We have no choice! Hurley, find Desmond! The rest of you, bunker down here.

Hurley runs back into the Hatch.

CUT TO:

INT. HATCH - CONTINUOUS

Hurley races through the complex, searching for Desmond.

HURLEY
Desmond! We need your help, man!

DES(DESMOND)
(appearing from a doorway)
What's going on, brother?

HURLEY
It's the smoke monster, it's back! And Locke says we gotta reset the timer!

Desmond's eyes widen in alarm.

DES
Right, let's go!

CUT TO:

EXT. HATCH - CONTINUOUS

Locke, Charlie, and Claire are on high alert, as the noises from the smoke monster intensify.

SAWYER (O.S.)
Oi, what's the big idea?

Locke turns to see Kate, Sawyer, Jin, and Sun join them at the Hatch.

LOCKE
The smoke monster is back, and we have to reset the timer!

KATE
Let's just do it, then!

Suddenly, the smoke monster comes barreling through the trees, causing everyone to panic and scramble. The monster zeroes in on Jin and Sun, and within an instant, it snatches them, and disappears into the darkness.

SAWYER
No! Jin! Sun!

Everyone is in a state of shock and horror as Locke, Desmond, and Hurley run back into the Hatch.

Lost: The Tides of Time

            EXT. JUNGLE - DAY

The survivors, JACK, KATE, SAWYER, HURLEY, LOCKE, and SAYID, trek across the island to an unfamiliar location.

JACK
We're running out of time. We need to find answers or we'll be stuck here forever.

KATE
We'll find a way, Jack. We always do.

SAWYER
(smirking)
Oh, don't worry, Doc. You and Freckles over there always find a way to save the day. Must be all that heroic chemistry.

KATE
(angry)
Enough, Sawyer!

They walk in silence until they approach a cave entrance.

LOCKE
This must be the place.

HURLEY
Dude, how do you know that?

LOCKE
(looking mysterious)
This island is never subtle. Trust me.

INT. CAVE - DAY

The group ventures inside, finding markings on the wall.

SAYID
This place must be thousands of years old.

KATE
But what does it have to do with us?

An ancient MACHINE comes to life, flickering and humming.

JACK
It looks like some sort of computer, but... ancient.

SAYID
It's counting down. From what I can see, it's based on lunar cycles.

LOCKE
I think this means the island is shifting through time.

HURLEY
Dude, like the show Quantum Leap?

SAWYER
You watch that geeky stuff?

IKE
Hey, Quantum Leap is a great show.

Suddenly, the group BLACKS OUT. When they come to, their surroundings appear slightly altered.

Lost: The Forgotten Island

EXT. THE ISLAND - CLEARING - DAY

Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley stand, arguing, in the quiet clearing. There are rusted, broken remains of an unknown object lying on the ground.

KATE
(angry)
We have to go back! There could be survivors!

SAWYER
(smirking)
And what if it's a trap, Freckles?

HURLEY
(uneasy)
Guys, do you remember last time we stumbled upon something new? It wasn't a good thing.

INT. THE HATCH - DAY

Locke examines a newly discovered room; it appears to be an old lab. Equipment probably hasn't been touched in decades. Jack enters.

JACK
What do you think this place is?

LOCKE
(studying the room)
A lab, maybe a research station. Who knows what they were doing here?

JACK
(skeptical)
But why build something like this here?

LOCKE
(smirking)
This island is full of secrets, Jack. We're just scratching the surface.

EXT. BEACH - DAY

Sun quietly tends to her garden. Jin approaches and hands her a water bottle.

JIN
(in Korean)
You can't work in the sun all day without proper hydration.

SUN
(smiling, in Korean)
Thank you. You're right.

EXT. THE ISLAND - JUNGLE - DAY

Hurley discovers a mysterious, ancient-looking door in the side of a hill.

HURLEY
(yelling)
Guys, come look at this!

Kate and Sawyer approach.

SAWYER
(eyeing the door)
Now what the hell is that?

KATE
(curious)
I don't know.

INT. THE MYSTERIOUS DOOR - DAY

The group enters the door; it's a dimly lit tunnel, walls adorned with intricate markings.

KATE
(whispers)
Guys, maybe we shouldn't be here.

SAWYER
(determined)
Well, it's not like we have any other options.

HURLEY
(tense)
Something about this place feels familiar.

The mysterious door suddenly slams shut behind them, but a strange mechanism prevents it from being opened by them. They are trapped inside.

SAWYER
(angry)
Great going, Hugo.

HURLEY
(defensive)
Hey, I didn't know this would happen!

KATE
(frantic)
We have to find a way out of here!

The camera then zooms in on one of the intricate markings on the wall, which appears to resemble the Dharma Initiative's logo, but slightly altered.

Lost: The Ghost Ship

            INT. HATCH - NIGHT

Desmond is turning the key in the hatch's central machine, resetting the timer. Jack, Kate, and Charlie watch him in the dim light.

DESMOND
It's not necessary for all of you to be here. You risk exposure.

JACK
You think we're leaving you alone in here after everything that's happened? Think again.

Charlie looks concerned and exchanges glances with Kate.

CHARLIE
There's still so much we don't understand about this place.

EXT. BEACH - DAY

Survivors are going about their daily routines, including Michael, Sawyer, and Hurley.

SAWYER
Whatcha working on, Doughboy?

HURLEY
Oh...um...I'm trying to build a shelter from these spare plane parts.

SAWYER
Yeah? Well, maybe the Big Bad Wolf won't come blow it down.

Michael interjects, smirking.

MICHAEL
Right. A shelter for one, by the look of it.

Hurley scowls but continues working. The sound of the waves grows louder, drawing everyone's attention to the shore. They see a massive, old ship with tattered sails, approaching the island.

KATE (O.S)
What is that?!

INT. HATCH - DAY

The group hears Kate's voice and rushes out to see what she's spotted.

EXT. BEACH - DAY

Jack, Kate, Desmond, and Charlie join the others on the shore as they marvel at the ghost ship approaching the island.

KATE
It looks abandoned. Do you think there's anyone on it?

JACK
We need to send a scout. If there's something that could help us get off this island, we need to know.

SAWYER (to Desmond)
You were on a boat once, right? How about you go take a look?

Desmond frowns but agrees.

DESMOND
I'll need someone else to come with me. We might need help.

KATE
I'll go.

As Desmond and Kate leave, the remaining survivors converse about what they might find on the ship.

CHARLIE
This is crazy. Lost treasure, ancient artifacts, or just plain empty?

JACK
Only one way to find out.

SAYID
I have a feeling this could change everything.

EXT. GHOST SHIP - DAY

Desmond and Kate navigate a smaller boat toward the ghost ship. They manage to climb on board, despite the ship's battered state.

INT. GHOST SHIP - DAY

The old ship creaks as Desmond and Kate explore its murky, dust-covered interior. They find a mysterious box with ancient symbols carved on it. Desmond reaches out to touch it...

Suddenly, the ship's inner workings begin to stir, and they hear movement all around them. They exchange terrified glances.

KATE
We need to get out of here now.

As they scramble back to the boat, they realize the ship begins drifting away from the island. The remaining survivors watch, worried, as the ghost ship sails away.

Lost: The Forgotten Path

            EXT. JUNGLE - DAY

Establishing shot of the dense jungle. The survivors are walking carefully in a single file, led by JACK.

LOCKE (V.O.):
Some paths are meant to be found.

INT. THE HATCH BUNKER - CONTINUOUS

LOCKE completes a drawing of a map on a piece of paper.

LOCKE:
This is the best I can do to remember what I saw. There's a path between where we are now and the beach. And if we're right, a new section of the island never explored.

KATE: (picks up the map)
I still don't understand why this means so much to you.

LOCKE:
I just have a feeling, Kate.

SAWYER smirks as he watches them.

SAWYER:
Looks like Johnny's got his groove back. (to Kate) You sure you wanna go off on another one of his famed hunches?

KATE:
It's better than sitting here and waiting for something to happen.

JACK:
All right, we leave at first light.

INT. THE HATCH BUNKER - THE NEXT MORNING

The small group of survivors, including JACK, KATE, SAWYER, and LOCKE, set off on their journey, following the map that LOCKE had drawn.

EXT. JUNGLE - DAY

As they continue their trek, JACK starts to question LOCKE.

JACK:
Locke, how do you know if what's at the end of this path won't just lead us to another trap like the hatch did?

LOCKE:
I don't. But I have to believe it's worth it.

SAWYER:
Great, we're risking our necks for his beliefs again.

Everyone continues silently, their apprehension apparent.

EXT. JUNGLE - LATER

As they traverse the jungle, KATE spots something peculiar in the distance.

KATE:
Locke, this isn't on your map.

The group discovers an ancient, overgrown temple structure.

LOCKE:
This is it. This is what we were meant to find.

JACK is clearly dismayed by the revelation.

JACK:
Locke, we're not going in there. We have no idea ...

LOCKE (interrupting):
Jack, this may be the discovery that changes everything!

JACK and LOCKE get into an argument that heats up, culminating in a physical altercation. At that moment, a loud, mysterious noise comes from the temple, followed by a blinding white light.

Cut to BLACK.

Lost: The Forgotten Past

            INT. JUNGLE - DAY

The survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 trudge through the dense jungle. JACK, KATE, SAWYER, SAYID, HURLEY, JOHN LOCKE, and JIN all navigate the twisted roots and vines.

JACK: Hurley, how much farther to the river?

HURLEY: We should be pretty close, dude.

SAYID: We need to find some fresh water soon or this entire trip was for nothing.

KATE: We're doing the best we can, Sayid.

SAWYER: Easy there, Mohammed. You think I'm in this for the scenic tour?

JOHN LOCKE: An expedition of this magnitude will take time. Patience is key.

JIN (subtitles): Let's hope the creature isn't following us.

EXT. JUNGLE - RIVER - DAY

The group finally reaches a river. It appears to be relatively smaller than most found on the island.

KATE: It's not much, but it's a start.

JACK: Sayid, test the water for contaminants.

SAYID: Understood.

Sayid takes out his equipment and begins testing the water. The other survivors keep watch for any potential threats that the island may have.

HURLEY: So, like, does anyone else find it weird that we haven't seen any other communities on this island?

JOHN LOCKE: This island is full of mysteries. Perhaps we are meant to uncover them one at a time.

JACK: Or maybe there's nothing left to uncover.

Suddenly, distant screams are heard from the jungle. The survivors grow increasingly concerned.

KATE: What was that?

JIN (subtitles): It sounded like people. In trouble.

SAWYER: Should we check it out, Doc? You know I'm all for shootin' the breeze by the water, but if there's more fools stuck on this island...

JACK: (reluctantly) We need to find them. They could be in trouble. But we have to be careful.

INT. JUNGLE - DAY

Navigating towards the distant screams, the survivors encounter a terrifying sight: a group of previously unknown survivors, bound and trapped in a net hanging from a tree.

LEADER OF NEW SURVIVORS: Help us! Please!

JACK: Who did this to you?

LEADER OF NEW SURVIVORS: We don't know! We were attacked by a group of men in masks. They chased us; we got caught in this trap.

KATE: Jack, they should come with us. We can't just leave them here.

JACK: Alright, let's get them down from there.

As the survivors work together to free the trapped individuals, they hear chilling laughter and whispers emanating from deeper within the jungle.

SAWYER: What in the hell is that?

JOHN LOCKE: I don't know, but we need to leave. Now.

The survivors and the newly found group quickly flee the scene, as the haunting laughter continues to echo around them.

Lost: The Unknown Island

            EXT. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND - DAY

We open with JACK, KATE, and SAWYER walking through the dense jungle. They're searching for a hidden cave mentioned in some notes they found at their camp.

JACK
(serious tone)
Stay focused. We don't know what's waiting for us in that cave.

SAWYER
(smirking)
Could be filled with those polar bears or maybe even more of those smoke monsters.

KATE
(concerned)
Jack, do you really think we'll find any answers in that cave?

JACK
(determined)
I believe we have to try, Kate. These notes may be our only clue to get out of this island.

EXT. MYSTERIOUS CAVE - DAY

The group arrives at the cave entrance. It's dark and silent, but they can sense something strange about it.

SAWYER
(pointing at the cave entrance)
Well, here it is. Home sweet home.

JACK
(to Sawyer)
You stay here and keep watch. Kate and I will go inside.

SAWYER
(rolling eyes)
Whatever you say, doc.

INT. MYSTERIOUS CAVE - DAY

JACK and KATE gingerly step into the cave, shining their flashlights to reveal the eerie surroundings. As they venture further, a faint glow catches their attention.

KATE
(whispers)
Jack, look at that.

JACK
(intrigued)
Let's see where it leads.

They follow the glow until they find the source: a glowing green wall covered in cryptic symbols and drawings.

JACK
(absolutely stunned)
What is this place?

KATE
(looking closer)
These symbols... they're a mix of Egyptian hieroglyphics, Greek letters, and... are those numbers?

JACK
Ever since the plane crashed on this damned island, we've faced one mystery after another...

Suddenly, they hear a loud ROAR echoing from the cave's entrance.

SAWYER
(shouting)
Jack! We got trouble!

INT. CAVE - DAY

JACK and KATE return to the entrance to find SAWYER fighting off a SMOKE MONSTER.

JACK
We have to help him!

KATE
(nods)
Let's do this!

As they prepare to face the monster, they see more figures emerging from the jungle. It appears they were not the only ones looking for the cave.

Lost: The Unseen Path

            EXT. JUNGLE - DAY

Sun, Jin, Hurley and Michael are trekking through the dense jungle, following a compass bearing given to them by Locke.

SUN: (speaking Korean, subtitled) I don't trust Locke. He's always keeping secrets.

JIN: (speaking Korean, subtitled) Neither do I, but we don't have a choice. We need to find water and more supplies.

HURLEY: Are we almost there yet? Feels like we've been walking for hours.

MICHAEL: Locke said it would take time. Keep up the pace.

They hear a rustling nearby, and everyone stops.

MICHAEL: (whispering) What was that?

HURLEY: I hope it's not one of those monster bears again.

They cautiously continue on.

INT. DHARMA INITIATIVE STATION - DAY

Locke, Jack, Kate and Sawyer are in an unknown station they've found after decoding a map. They are exploring the room filled with computers, maps and strange-looking devices.

KATE: I've never seen anything like this before. What do you think they were doing here?

JACK: More importantly, where are they now?

SAWYER: Probably went off to get themselves more polar bears.

LOCKE: We need to focus on finding out more about this place and how it can help us. Jack, see if you can find something useful in those documents.

While Jack is searching through documents, he finds a binder with information about the island's geography.

JACK: Hey, listen to this: 'Electromagnetic fields are not the only phenomena in the island. Other characteristics include underground rivers that connect to the ocean...' This could be useful.

Kate notices a switchboard with lights flickering on it.

KATE: What do you think this is for?

LOCKE: Be careful. We don't know what it controls. We don't want to trigger anything dangerous.

EXT. JUNGLE - DAY

Sun, Jin, Hurley and Michael emerge from the jungle to find a riverbank.

SUN: (speaking Korean, subtitled) Look! We found a fresh water source.

JIN: (speaking Korean, subtitled) Finally, some good news.

MICHAEL: (smiling) Great job, guys. Let's refill our bottles and start heading back.

Suddenly, they hear whispers coming from the trees surrounding them, and they see shadows approaching.

HURLEY: Guys, I really don't like this! What's going on?

UNKNOWN VOICE: (from off-screen) Why are you here?

The group looks around in confusion, trying to locate the source of the voice. The screen goes black.
