The camera pans in, as the doctors bustling around. MEREDITH, BAILEY, and JO are discussing a complex case.

MEREDITH: She's only seventeen years old, and her heart is already struggling.

BAILEY: We'll need to assess her for a possible heart transplant.

JO: This is crazy... She had so much potential.

MAGGIE and DELUCA are talking to the TEENAGE GIRL about her condition.

            INT. GREY SLOAN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL - EARLY MORNING

Meredith (voiceover): Most people think doctors are like superheroes, as if our white coats are actually capes. The reality is, we're just people. And people have flaws.

INT. LOCKER ROOM - MORNING

Meredith, Bailey, and Jo are getting ready for the day.

Bailey: We've got a big day ahead of us, ladies. Mer, you'll be in the ER with me, Jo, you have ortho consults with Dr. Hunt.

Jo: Shouldn't I be on your service, Chief? I'm Karev's substitute.

Bailey: You're not Karev, so don't try to be him. Just do what you're told.

INT. ER - LATER

Bailey and Meredith are seeing to a young girl with her mother, both exhausted.

Mother: She's just been getting worse, I don't know what to do anymore.

Bailey: Don't worry, we'll figure it out. Alex was always so great with young patients, this girl will be just fine.

Meredith (voiceover): Alexander Michael Karev. The best peds surgeon I know.

INT. PEDS DEPARTMENT - FLASHBACK

We see a smiling Alex Karev playing with some children while checking on them. Coming back to reality...

INT. ER - MOMENTS LATER

Meredith: Bailey, you need to let go. Alex is not here, and you don't have to mention his name every time we see a kid.

Bailey: I'm sorry, I didn't mean...

Meredith: It's alright, let's just focus on helping this girl.

INT. ORTHO DEPARTMENT - DAY

Jo and Owen are looking at an x-ray of a leg.

Owen: Looks like a fracture in the tibia.

Jo: Yeah...

Owen: Jo, is everything okay?

Jo: I just miss Alex, you know? It's been months since he left, and it still feels weird.

Owen: You're not alone, we all miss him. But we have to keep moving forward.

Meredith and Bailey work to save the young girl when an urgent incoming patient shakes up the atmosphere.

JO: A mix of cases. The most interesting is a trauma patient with some severe head injuries.

MEREDITH: Alright, I'll take a look at that one. Keep me posted on anything else that pops up.

JO: Will do, Dr. Grey.

ALEX and MAGGIE are attending to a man with a severe head injury.

MAGGIE: His pupils are dilated, and he's been slipping in and out of consciousness.

As Richard leaves, an ER NURSE rushes in.

INT. SEATTLE GRACE HOSPITAL – EMERGENCY ROOM – CONTINUOUS

JO
Multiple injuries, Dr. Webber. It's a mess.

RICHARD
Alright, let's get to work. Alex, you take that patient. Jo, help me with this one.

INT. SEATTLE GRACE HOSPITAL – OR – DAY

Meredith, Elena, Josh, and Xavier are performing the mock surgery. The patient, a MEDICAL DUMMY, lays on the table. Elena's idea seems to be working until something goes wrong.

ELENA
(frantic)
Dr. Grey, I-I don't know what's happening. It didn't look anything like this in the textbook.

MEREDITH
(remaining composed)
Don't panic, just concentrate. We can find a solution.

INT. DOCTOR'S LOUNGE - DAY

Bailey, Meredith, Amelia, and Owen are examining a patient's chart on a tablet.

BAILEY: We have to reduce the tumor without causing further damage to the adjacent blood vessels.

MEREDITH: A risky surgery but the patient has no other options.

OWEN (nodding): Agreed. I'll prep the OR and get the patient ready.

Meredith receives a text message and visibly reacts: it's from Derek's sister Nancy, who is planning a surprise visit to Seattle.

INT. PEDS WARD - DAY

Alex is with a young patient, DYLAN, who is undergoing cancer treatment. Jo enters, surprised to see Alex bonding with the child.

JO: You never struck me as the 'doting doctor' type, Karev.

Alex playfully rolls his eyes.

ALEX: I guess this kid just brings out the best in me.

April nods, rushing away as Maggie assists with the victim.

MAGGIE: BP is dropping. We need to get her stabilized!

Jackson looks over at the frightened husband, who clutched the hand of his unconscious wife.

INT. OPERATING ROOM - DAY

Amelia, Meredith, and Owen are working on the brain tumor patient. The atmosphere is tense but focused. The beeping of the heart monitor slowly increases, causing concern among the surgeons.

AMELIA: The tumor is larger than we anticipated.

27-year-old female, fell off a boat during a storm. Hypothermic, with several broken ribs. Her friends managed to pull her out of the water.

The patient, LUCY, opens her eyes and tries to sit up.

LUCY:
Am I... in the hospital?

ALEX:
Yes, take it easy. You're at Grey Sloan Memorial. You've been through quite an ordeal.

LUCY:
I have to find my brother. He was still in the water.

The patient starts to cry, and the doctors exchange concerned glances.

Jo and Schmitt chat as they get ready for their shifts.

SCHMITT:

I'm so sorry, we are doing everything we can to help all survivors.

Arizona and April watch Amelia's surgery, discussing the rescue efforts on the water.
