ER: Code Red

INT. COUNTY GENERAL HOSPITAL - NURSES' STATION - DAY

The nurses and doctors of the ER are bustling about, preparing for another demanding day. Dr. MARK GREENE, an experienced and caring physician, is discussing a patient with the head nurse CAROL HATHAWAY.

MARK
Carol, did you follow up on Mrs. Johnson's labs?

CAROL
(looking at chart)
Yes, I did. Her liver enzymes are elevated, but she's not in immediate danger. We'll continue monitoring her closely.

As Carol hands Dr. Greene the chart, suave and confident Dr. JOHN CARTER enters the ER, accompanied by nervous and diligent medical student LUCY KNIGHT.

CARTER
Lucy, have you ever inserted a chest tube before?

LUCY
(nervously)
No, not yet, Dr. Carter.

CARTER
Well, today's your lucky chance. We've got a patient with a pneumothorax coming in. Prep for surgery.

Lucy nods and quickly leaves to prepare. A FAMILIAR VOICE comes over the PA system.

PA
Attention all staff: CODE RED. Emergency situation. This is not a drill.

Everyone in the ER freezes, knowing that a Code Red is a dire situation.

MARK
(severe)
All right, everyone. We've trained for this. Carol, get our trauma team ready. Doug, call a full code in the MICU. Carter, take Lucy and prep the trauma rooms.

DOUG ROSS, a charismatic pediatrician, starts rushing towards the MICU. The team jumps into action, preparing equipment and supplies. As they prepare, EMTs suddenly rush through the doors, wheeling in several patients with varying degrees of injuries.

EMT 1
We've got a multi-car pile up on the interstate. Multiple casualties, with more on the way.

PETER BENTON, a skilled and passionate surgeon, focuses on a critically injured man, while Dr. KERRY WEAVER cautiously evaluates another patient.

PETER
(intense)
All right, let's move. We need to get him into the OR now!

KERRY
(sarcastic)
As if a Code Red wasn't enough. We'll handle this, Benton. Focus on your patient.

As the trauma rooms fill with patients, the pressure continues to mount. The ER team works tirelessly, focused on their tasks, but unbeknownst to them, a mysterious figure watches from the shadows. Dr. SUSAN LEWIS, a tenacious physician and friend of many on the team, spots this figure.

SUSAN
(whispering)
Who is that?

The reception area is busy, NURSES and DOCTORS are moving quickly, dealing with PATIENTS.

DR. GREENE walks to the reception desk.

DR.GREENE
Linda, did you see where Dr. Weaver left the test results for Paige?

LINDA
I think she mentioned something about putting them in your office.

DR.GREENE
Thanks, Linda.

INT. DR. GREENE'S OFFICE - DAY

Dr. Greene enters his office and finds the test results on his desk. He starts examining the file.

DR.GREENE
(whispers)
This doesn't look good.

INT. ER - EXAM ROOM - DAY

PAIGE, a young girl in her late teens, is waiting anxiously. DR. WEAVER walks in with DR. GREENE.

DR.WEAVER
Paige, we have received your test results, and it seems you have an underlying condition called Wilson’s Disease.

PAIGE
What does that mean for me?

DR.GREENE
It's a rare genetic disorder that causes excess copper to accumulate in your body. It can affect various organs and bodily functions, but with proper medical care, you can live a relatively normal life.

PAIGE
Will I have to take medication? Or change the way I live?

DR. WEAVER
Yes, you will need to take medication to help manage the excess copper, and there will be some changes to your diet and lifestyle.

INT. ER - NURSES STATION - DAY

DR. BENTON is talking to NURSE HATFIELD, an experienced and tough head nurse.

DR. BENTON
Nurse Hatfield, I need you to call the OR and change the time for Mr. Johnson's surgery.

NURSE HATFIELD
His surgery was scheduled by Dr. Kovac who is out sick now. Are you taking over the case?

DR. BENTON
Yes, I've discussed it with Dr. Romano.

NURSE HATFIELD
I'll make the call.

INT. ER - CORRIDOR - DAY

DR. CARTER and JP, a medical student shadowing him, quickly heads to an exam room.

DR. CARTER
Looks like we got ourselves a busy day ahead.

JP
This is my first time in an ER. I'm excited and nervous.

DR. CARTER
You'll do fine. Just listen, learn, and don't hesitate to ask questions.

INT. ER - EXAM ROOM - DAY

A rushed and tired DOCTOR KEATON enters the room, examining a PATIENT'S chart.

DOCTOR KEATON
Alright, let's see what we have here. Mr. Thompson…

PATIENT
I've been waiting for hours.

DOCTOR KEATON
I apologize for the wait, Mr. Thompson. We’ve been swamped today.

The CAMERA PULLS BACK to reveal the entire busy ER, bustling with activity as people deal with their roles in life-changing events.

ER: To Heal or Not to Heal

            INT. EMERGENCY ROOM - DAY

The hustle and bustle of the emergency room is in full swing as NURSES, DOCTORS, and PATIENTS dart in and out of frame. Dr. Carter enters confidently, coffee in hand, as he checks his patient charts.

DR. CARTER
(to an orderly)
Make sure Mrs. Henderson gets her med refill, and have radiology recheck those X-rays of Mr. Thompson's chest.

ORDERLY
Yes, Dr. Carter.

As Carter continues, he encounters Dr. Kovac, who appears deep in thought.

DR. CARTER
(smiling)
Luka, you look like you're trying to solve world peace!

DR. KOVAC
(smirking)
I wish! I'm just trying to figure out a treatment plan for a complicated patient.

At that moment, PARAMEDICS burst in with an unconscious PATIENT and CHAOS ensues.

DR. WEAVER
(to paramedics)
What do we have!

PARAMEDIC #1
Male, late 20s, possible overdose. Found unresponsive, vitals are unstable.

DR. WEAVER
Bring him into trauma one! Dr. Kovac, you're with me. Carter, take care of Mrs. Abott's discharge papers.

As they rush to trauma one, NURSE HATHAWAY approaches Dr. Carter.

NURSE HATHAWAY
(to Dr. Carter)
Have you seen Dr. Ross? He's late for his shift, again.

DR. CARTER
(sighs)
Last I heard, he was grabbing a bite in the cafeteria. I'll check on him.

While Carter steps out to track Dr. Ross, Weaver, and Kovac jump into action, trying to save the unconscious patient.

DR. WEAVER
Pupils are nonreactive. Start him on oxygen and get an IV in, stat!

INT. CAFETERIA - DAY

Dr. Carter finds Dr. Ross lounging in the cafeteria, engrossed in a conversation with a group of NURSES.

DR. CARTER
(annoyed)
Ross, you're due in the ER.

DR. ROSS
(surprised)
Already!? My shift goes by too quick. Catch you later, ladies!

As they head back to the ER, Dr. Ross probes Dr. Carter.

DR. ROSS
(smiling)
So, heard rumors about you and Hathaway... Anything I should know?

DR. CARTER
(rolls eyes)
Absolutely not. Just gossip.

INT. EMERGENCY ROOM - DAY

Back in the ER, Dr. Ross and Carter rejoin the team. Dr. Weaver keeps an eye on the unstable overdose patient while directing her team.

DR. WEAVER
Carter, we need a tox screen on this patient to figure out what he took. Ross, assist Dr. Kovac with the IV.

Carter and Ross comply. The patient's condition worsens, and a CODE BLUE is called in. The medical staff springs into action, performing CPR and administering medication.

A busy Chicago ER in the middle of a chaotic DAY SHIFT. NURSES and DOCTORS move swiftly between PATIENTS, treating injuries and illnesses.

DR. GREENE, an experienced ER doctor, approaches the triage desk where NURSE HATHAWAY is working.

DR. GREENE
(apologetic)
Nurse Hathaway, I'm sorry, it looks like Dr. Weaver is stuck in a car accident
on the freeway. Can you handle the triage for me?

NURSE HATHAWAY
(slightly frustrated)
It's going to be a challenge, Dr. Greene, but I'll manage.

As DR. GREENE walks away, the ER doors burst open, revealing two PARAMEDICS pushing a gurney with a PATIENT in critical condition. The PARAMEDICS give their report to DR. GREENE as they move along.

PARAMEDIC 1
38 year old male, ran into a tree. Obvious head trauma.

Get me a C-collar and a backboard, stat.

Thank you so much, Doctor.

The night shift crew is bustling. DOCTOR KERRY WEAVER barks orders to the team, including DOCTOR JOHN CARTER, DOCTOR LUKA KOVAC, and NURSE ABBY LOCKHART.

The team disperses to attend to their respective patients.

I... it was just some pills I found. Thought it’d... help me forget.
